About Trees 78 Foundation

Our historical base for over 30 years was the Lexington Ave/Third Ave 100 Block. Started as a Block Association by Dr. & Mrs. Fletcher McDowell in the late 1970s, and led for many years by Mrs. McDowell. In 2019 the Association was reorganized, named Trees 78 Foundation, and approved as a 501(c)3 charity by the IRS and NYS.

In 2021 we were joined by the Third Ave/Second Ave 200 Block, and in future years we hope to include other East 78th Street Blocks.

Trees 78 Foundation recognizes that all trees planted on East 78th Street are owned by New York City, and Trees 78 Foundation makes every effort to ensure that all its work is consistent with the updated NYC “One Million Trees” standards and, where applicable, done by NYC licensed contractors under appropriate permits as required by the NYC agencies having jurisdiction.

Trees 78 Foundation would also like to thank the New York City Tree Trust and the City Parks Foundation for their help and assistance over many years. All our work is funded by annual donations from the buildings on East 78th Street and the residents who live on our blocks.
